Can painful blood draws to monitor drug levels be eliminated? To answer that question, a group of pediatric nurses initiated a study with the Pediatric Pulmonary Division and Pediatric Pharmacy to determine if accurate drug levels could be obtained from central venous catheters that were already in place to administer antibiotics. The team found that with the appropriate protocols, blood from the catheters provided comparable test results to a peripheral draw, so kids can avoid the sting of a needle in the arm.
