The Johns Hopkins EACU improves throughput and decreases the length of stay in the main ED through:
  • Observation of patients for up to 24 hours for sustained studies, testing and treatments (including cardiac imaging/MRIs)
  • Cardiac evaluation program
  • Primary evaluation of main ED overflow patients
  • Holding admitted patients awaiting beds
Patient Population
  • Adult and geriatric overflow from the main ED
  • Direct referral from community physicians
  • Pre-operative transplant patients

Number of Beds

  • 14 telemetry; 2 procedure spaces
Nurse/Patient Ratio
  • 1:4-5
Rotation/Shifts
  • Variety available
Skill Mix
  • 16 percent ADN; 80 percent BSN
Orientation
  • Experienced RNs: individualized comprehensive program with two RN preceptors and the nurse educator includes:
    • Clinical experience: ED, EACU, UCC, psychiatry
    • Critical care, trauma, computer and ACLS classes
    • Share days with social workers, respiratory therapy and Baltimore City paramedics
  • New grads:
    • New Grads: SPRING program
    • 3-month program including all of the above and weekly ED-specific classroom education
