Intensive and intermediate care for critically ill patients following gastrointestinal, oncology/endocrine, gynecologic, thoracic, plastic, otolaryngology/head and neck, orthopedic and renal transplantation surgical procedures.


Patient Population

  • Ages 16 and up
  • 85 percent surgical oncology diagnoses and 15 percent general surgical diagnoses
  • Average length of stay: 2 days

Number of Beds

  • 20

Nurse/Patient Ratio

  • 1:2

Rotation/Shifts

  • 12 hours
  • Flexible, self-scheduling

Skill Mix

  • Predominantly RN
  • Multidisciplinary team includes acute care nurse practitioners

Orientation

  • Experienced ICU nurses: 10 to 12 weeks
  • Med-surg-prepared nurses: 14 to 18 weeks
  • New grads: 16 to 24 weeks; SPRING program
