Patient Population
  • Adult
  • Diagnoses include: congestive heart failure, pneumonia, asthma, cellulitis, GI- and cancer-related problems, new onset diabetes, hematologic disorders
  • Admissions from the emergency department, outside hospitals and referring Hopkins clinics
  • Average length of stay: 3 to 5 days
Number of Beds
  • 17
Nurse/Patient Ratio
  • Day/Evening: 1:4
  • Night: 1:5-6
Rotation/Shifts
  • Self-scheduling; 6-week schedules of 70 percent day shifts, 30 percent night shifts, every third weekend
Skill Mix
  • 85 percent RN; 15 percent clinical associate
  • RN composite: 6 percent ADN; 94 percent BSN
  • Required competencies: BLS, ACLS preferred; telemetry
