Specialty nursing care for adult patients of all acuity levels, including critical care, on the Blood and Marrow Transplant Service.


Patient Population
  • Adults with hematologic malignancies receiving allogeneic and autologous hematopoetic stem cell transplants and other novel therapies
  • Adults with leukemias, lymphomas, Hodgkin’s disease and multiple myeloma
  • Patients from any oncology service who become critically ill and are treated with ventilators, CVVHD, Swan Ganz catheters and/or vasopressors as required
  • Average length of stay: 11 days
Number of Beds
  • 16
Nurse/Patient Ratio
  • Day: 1:1-3
  • Night: 1:1-4
Rotation/Shifts
  • All 12-hour shifts; flexible scheduling based on unit-specific guidelines and a self-scheduling model
Skill Mix
  • 88 percent RN; 85 percent BSN; 7 percent MSN
  • Required competencies: provision of chemotherapy, blood and TPN administration skills, care of multiple types of infusion catheters, critical care and symptom management of high-dose therapy such as GVHD, VOD, pulmonary and cardiac toxicity
Orientation
  • Orientation period extends over the first year including:
    • 10 to 12 week program including oncology and BMT classes and precepted time with experienced RN staff
    • At 6 months to 1 year: critical care
    • At 9 months to 1 year: [IPOP clinic] (link to IPOP description)
  • New Grads: SPRING program
