Care for adult patients of all acuity levels on the Hematologic Malignancies, Solid Tumor or the Bone Marrow Transplant Services—part of the IPOP continuum of care.


Patient Population
  • Hematologic Malignancies: adults with relapsed or refractory leukemias and lymphomas
  • Bone Marrow Transplant Service: adults with hematologic malignancies receiving peripheral blood stem cell, allogeneic and autologous and bone marrow transplants
  • Solid Tumor Service: adults with solid tumors (lung, breast, colon, head/neck, myeloma, brain, ovarian, prostate) treated with protocol and individual progressive modes of therapy; some Phase I drug studies
  • Average length of stay: 7 days
Number of Beds
  • 15
Nurse/Patient Ratio
  • Day: 1:2-3
  • Night: 1:3-4
Rotation/Shifts
  • Flexible, depending on unit-specific guidelines and self-scheduling model
Skill Mix
  • 90 percent RN; 100 percent BSN; 10 percent MSN
  • Required competencies: provision of chemotherapy, blood and TPN administration skills, IV and PICC skills, and IMC level of care, including cardiac monitoring
Orientation
  • New Grads: SPRING program
  • Experienced nurses: 10 to 12 weeks
  • Detailed orientation maps, skills checklists and a “Words of Wisdom” journal entry book
  • After 6 months, 4-day orientation review and wrap-up with unit-based clinical nurse specialist
  • Additional ongoing departmental and unit-based programs throughout the first year
